This month, CVS and Target (which is owned by CVS) price both brand-name Cialis and its generic form, tadalafil, higher than the national average.
The two drugs have similar prices, “often going up because the generic manufacturers change their business practices,” says David Scholl, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas, Houston, and author of the new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
The price difference between tadalafil and Cialis is small, of unknown determinants, says Scholl, who is not a member of theroskeinarian. Cialis is the generic version of tadalafil and is available in 20 milligrams, while tadalafil is sold under the brand name Cialis and is available in 10 milligrams, a dosage of 20 milligrams a day.
A 20-milligram dosage of tadalafil can cost as little as $10 per dose. Scholl notes that tadalafil has been available in pill form for as little as a year, and the price difference may be because of generic competition.
Both drugs have been approved for use in the U. S., with the exception of Pfizer Inc. in 2003, which has been using tadalafil since 2003. CVS, which began selling Cialis in 2003, began selling the generic version in 2006 and is still marketing it today.
CVS did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press.
Scholl and his co-authors in the new study note that the national average tadalafil price of $13.70 for 20 milligram tablets of 20 milligrams has been shown to be “overstated,” meaning that the average price for 20 milligrams of tadalafil is $13.60, or $0.32 a pill.
CVS recently decreased its price for tadalafil by 50 cents to $6.22 a pill. In February, the company said it would cut the price by 50 percent by the end of the year, though that move is still subject to approval by the Food and Drug Administration.
Scholl says that while the price difference between Cialis and tadalafil is small, the generic price difference is often too small to affect people who take it as a daily tablet, like Scholl, who’s also on a 30-milligram dose of tadalafil.
Scholl’s study was funded by CVS. CVS does not manufacture tadalafil.
The researchers’ results were published in the December 2022 issue of PLOS Neg. J. Med., a journal of psychiatry.
“It’s difficult to compare these drugs in terms of their cost to the national average because they have so different market segments,” Scholl says. “However, the differences are small.”
CVS sells tadalafil for about $13.70 a pill, while its generic equivalent, cialis, sells for $6.22 a pill. Scholl and his colleagues estimate that tadalafil could cost as little as $10 per dose, while the generic can cost as much as $15 per dose. (The dose of tadalafil is 10 milligrams a day.)
The study, published in the January 2022 issue ofJAMA Internal Medicine,shows that tadalafil is “often priced higher than Cialis because of generic competition,” says Scholl. “It’s also very cheap.”
Scholl and his co-authors note that CVS has “been around for a while” and has a long history of selling brand-name drugs. They’re the makers of Cialis and tadalafil, respectively, and have been selling them since 2003, when CVS became the country’s first-line pharmacy.
Scholl’s study is part of a larger study of tadalafil prices from 2000 through 2015 that was funded by CVS.
According to Scholl, the results “show that tadalafil may be priced higher than Cialis because of generic competition.”
Scholl says that if tadalafil were the generic version of Cialis, then the price would be even higher.
